Based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March, the Selma staff ride focusses on moral courage and leading change in the renewal of society. The Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March (“Selma March”) took place March 21–25, 1965, from the town of Selma, AL, 54 miles to the steps of the state capitol in Montgomery. Led by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the march was the culminating event of several tumultuous months. As many as 25,000 people participated in the final leg of the march. Together, these events became a landmark in the American civil rights movement and directly led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
